Numerous faults in the South Island also cause earthquakes - the Murchison earthquake in 1929 with a magnitude of 7.8 and more recently in 1968, Inangahua was hit with a 7.1.

There have been other large earthquakes in the region such as the magnitude 7.1 Marlborough earthquake in 1848.
